It can be very frustrating, but design trends quickly evolve and die out during the course of a year. So don’t expect anything less from the industry over the next 12 months.

1. Semi-Flat Designs

The recent trend of flat designs started with Windows Metro. However, flat designs aren’t that great and fall short when it comes to creating world class designs. As a result, it has now evolved into semi-flat designs which offer another dimension (making images appear slightly elevated).

Industry experts believe that this trend will gather momentum in the coming months. So regardless of whether you love or hate them, you’re going to see a lot more semi-flat designs this year.

2. Website Animations & Storytelling

Storytelling through websites will increase this year (even though it’s quite difficult to accomplish). As the focus shifts to providing consumers with rich and unique detailed user-experiences, more effort will be made to make a connection on a personal level.

If you decide to incorporate this theme in your next project, make sure that the story you tell is communicated through the following:

  • Imagery
  • Typography
  • Minimalism

When executed properly, this method can be used to make your brand stand out in a crowded marketplace. Having excellent content on a traditional design will not do the job anymore as users have become accustomed to being entertained while getting the information and experience that they’re after.

3. Blue Hues & Soft Ombres

This year will be the year of blue hue as shades of the ocean will become increasingly popular. Further, warm tones and soft ombres will take center stage as relaxation and mindfulness will gain more importance in society.

As digital life continues to rob us of sleep, more attention will be placed on creating a warm and soothing environment (both in the real and virtual worlds). Further, industrial pastelswill also have enhanced prominence in the near future.

4. Typography (Bolder & Bigger)

During print’s heyday in publishing, small fonts were extremely popular as it saved space and allowed you to pack in some more content. This philosophy didn’t transcend into the digital space as the new mantra was “less is more.”

Over the past 12 months, fonts became much bigger and bolder than their predecessors. San-serif fonts dominated mobile screens and followed a minimal graphic design theme. But as mobile and tab screens get bigger, Helvetica becomes increasingly insignificant. So expect designer to get more nostalgic of print design principles and incorporate more typography to enhance brand appeal.
